The prostitution economy, in one big map

The world’s oldest profession is also an incredibly large one, stretching from San Francisco to Osaka, according to a new report.

There are 40 million to 42 million prostitutes in the world, according to the report from Fondation Scelles. Some 80 percent of them are female, and 75 percent are between the ages of 13 and 25.

Fondation Scelles also released a map of sex tourism sites, showing Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, India and Thailand acting as hubs for sex tourism, represented by stars.

Countries represented in red are a destination for sex tourism, countries in blue are places where those who engage in sex tourism originate, and countries in white are examples of both, according to Fondation
Scelles.
